Getting an Apple Watch ready to sell

A locked Apple Watch is not a watch anyone can buy — not us, not the next owner, nobody. That is the true and stronger framing here, and it is also the easiest mistake to avoid if you handle it in the right order. Here is what actually clears Activation Lock, what does not, and what your options are if the phone the watch was paired to is already gone.
Why a reset on the watch itself is not enough
It is a reasonable assumption: reset the watch back to factory settings, the way you would with almost any other device, and it should be clean. On an Apple Watch, that assumption is wrong. Activation Lock does not live on the watch — it lives on the Apple ID the watch was set up with — so a factory reset performed on the watch itself leaves that lock fully in place no matter how thoroughly the reset runs. The watch will look wiped. It will not be unlocked.
The step that actually works: unpair from the Watch app
The way to clear Activation Lock is to unpair the watch from the Watch app on the iPhone it is paired to, not from the watch's own settings menu. Open the Watch app, select your watch, and choose Unpair Apple Watch — this walks through the unpairing and removes Activation Lock as part of the same process. It is the simplest route while the paired phone is still in hand, and it is worth doing before you touch anything else on the watch. If the paired phone is already gone
Selling, trading in, or wiping the paired iPhone before you deal with the watch does not, by itself, make the watch unrecoverable. Activation Lock is tied to your Apple ID, not to the phone, so it can still be turned off through Find Devices at icloud.com as long as you know the Apple ID and password the watch was set up with. The case that is genuinely hard to come back from is losing access to that Apple ID itself — without it, there is no remaining way to remove the lock.
Galaxy Watch and Fitbit: the same idea
The same logic applies outside of Apple's ecosystem. Galaxy Watch and Fitbit devices are also tied to the account they are paired with, and each has its own account-unlinking step inside its companion app rather than on the watch itself. Unlink the device from your account through the app it is paired with, the same way you would unpair an Apple Watch through the Watch app, before you consider it ready to sell.
Why this matters more than condition
A scratched case or a worn band never rules a smartwatch out on its own, and neither does a battery that no longer lasts like it used to. A locked one does, regardless of how good the screen looks or how new the model is — a watch still tied to somebody else's account is not something anyone can do anything with, no matter how well it otherwise checks out. Handle the unpairing first, in whichever app matches your watch, and only then bring it in for a look through the smartwatches page. Getting this one step right before you do anything else is what turns a wasted trip into a normal one.
