Sell your headphones and speakers in Albany for cash

Good headphones and speakers hold up for years, and a lot of them end up in a drawer after an upgrade. Tell us what you have. We set a time to meet in the Albany area or come to you, check everything together, and pay cash on the spot for anything we can use.

What we take

On the headphone side we look at Apple AirPods, including AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, Beats models such as the Studio Pro, Solo and Powerbeats Pro, Bose QuietComfort headphones and earbuds, the Sony WH-1000XM and WF-1000XM lines, Samsung Galaxy Buds, and studio headphones from Sennheiser, Audio-Technica and Beyerdynamic. On the speaker side we look at Sonos, including the Era, Move, Roam, One, Arc, Beam and Sub, JBL portable speakers such as the Charge, Flip, Xtreme, Boombox and PartyBox, Bose SoundLink and smart speakers, the Apple HomePod and HomePod mini, soundbars, and home audio such as stereo receivers, amplifiers and turntables. Older iPods are worth asking about as well. Even if you do not see your exact model named here, tell us what you have and we will look. Very inexpensive earbuds and unbranded speakers are generally not something we can use, and we would rather say that now than have you make a trip for nothing.

Condition, in plain language

For earbuds, completeness comes first: both earbuds and the charging case is one thing to describe, a single earbud or a case on its own is another, and all of them are worth mentioning. After that, what matters is whether they connect, whether sound comes from both sides at the same volume, and how long the battery lasts, since earbud batteries fade with age and that is ordinary rather than a defect. For over-ear headphones, worn or flaking ear pads are the most common sign of age and are replaceable, while a cracked headband or a hinge that has snapped is a bigger matter. For speakers, tell us whether it powers on, whether it charges if it is portable, and whether the sound is clean or buzzes and crackles at volume. Dents in a speaker grille are cosmetic. Water damage is worth being honest about, even on a speaker sold as water resistant. Describe things as they are. It changes what we can say, not whether it is worth a message.

Before you meet us

Apple audio gear is tied to your Apple Account through Find My, and that link needs removing before anyone else can use it. For AirPods, AirPods Max or Beats, open the Find My app, select the item and choose to remove it from your account, then forget it in your Bluetooth settings. AirPods that are still linked will show the next owner a warning that they belong to somebody else. For a HomePod, remove it from the Home app, which resets it. For Sonos, remove the speaker from your system in the Sonos app, or factory reset it, so that it can be added to a new one. A Bose, Sony or JBL product generally needs nothing more than being forgotten on your phone. Wipe everything down, and for earbuds that means cleaning the mesh and the inside of the case, since that is the first thing anyone looks at. Charge it, then gather the cable, the case, any spare ear tips, and the box if you kept it.

How the meetup works

Every meetup is by appointment, so nothing happens until we have agreed a time with you. Tell us the make, the model and what comes with it through the form, or text us a photo. We set a time to meet in the Albany area, or we come to you when that is easier, which is the better choice for a soundbar, a pair of large speakers or a whole home system. At the meetup we pair the headphones or speaker, play something through it, listen to both sides, check that noise cancelling works where it has it, confirm it has been removed from your account, and look it over for wear, all while you stand right there. It takes a few minutes. Then we tell you plainly what we can buy that day. Anything we take is paid for in cash on the spot, and anything we cannot use stays with you, with an honest reason. Bring the whole drawer if you have more than one pair.

Questions we get

Do you buy AirPods with only one earbud, or with no case?
Sometimes. A complete set is a different thing to describe than a single earbud or a case alone, so tell us exactly which pieces you have and which generation they are, and we will say whether it is worth bringing.
Do I need to remove my AirPods from Find My before selling them?
Yes, and it takes a minute. Open the Find My app, choose the AirPods and remove them from your account; until you do, the next owner is shown a warning that they are linked to someone else.
Do you buy used earbuds at all?
Yes, the well-known models from Apple, Bose, Sony, Beats and Samsung are worth asking about. Give them a proper clean first, including the mesh and the inside of the case.
Do you buy Sonos speakers and soundbars?
Yes, Sonos is worth asking about, from a single Roam to a full home theatre set. Remove each speaker from your Sonos system in the app first, so that it can be added to a new one.
