Before you sell this iPhone
Apple publishes the steps for handing an iPhone to someone else, and doing them before we meet is the easiest route. In order: back up the phone, unpair any Apple Watch that is paired with it, and cancel or transfer AppleCare if you have it. Then open Settings, tap your name and tap Sign Out; on iOS 26 or later you can choose Erase this iPhone at that point, and on iOS 18 or earlier you enter your Apple Account password and tap Turn Off. Finally go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings and enter your passcode if asked. Apple says erasing also turns off Find My and Activation Lock. If the phone uses an eSIM, choose the option to erase the eSIM profile when asked, or contact your carrier about moving your number first. If you are switching to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage as well. Apple also suggests removing the old phone from your trusted devices list afterward. Stuck on a password or a prompt? - Can I sell an iPhone I am still paying off?
- It is worth asking, but say upfront that there is a balance with your carrier. Tell us the carrier and whether the phone is on an installment plan, and we will tell you if we can still set up a meetup.
- Do I need the original box and cable?
- No, the phone is what matters. Bring the box, cable or case if you have them and leave them home if you do not.
- What about my Apple Watch or AirPods?
- Unpair an Apple Watch from the iPhone before you erase the phone, since Apple lists that as the first step. If you also want to sell the watch or earbuds, mention them when you reach out and see the smartwatches page.
