How do you wipe a Mac before you sell it?
· Cash For Electronics Albany Team
On a MacBook with Apple silicon or a T2 chip running macOS Monterey 12 or later, back up, then choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. That one tool signs you out and erases the Mac in a few minutes. Older Macs take a few more steps in macOS Recovery. Here are both routes, using the menu names Apple documents.
Step 1: Back up your files
Erasing removes everything, so back up first with Time Machine or by copying your files to an external drive or iCloud. If you are moving to a new Mac, transfer your data across before you start. Check your backup actually opens before you erase.
Step 2: Sign out of your Apple Account and iMessage
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click your name in the sidebar, scroll down and click Sign Out. On Monterey 12, Big Sur 11 or Catalina 10.15, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Apple ID, select Overview and click Sign Out. Then open Messages, choose Messages > Settings (or Preferences), click iMessage and click Sign Out. On macOS older than Catalina, also open iTunes and choose Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer.
Step 3, the quick route: Erase All Content and Settings
This works on a Mac with Apple silicon or an Apple T2 Security Chip, running macOS Monterey 12 or later. On Ventura or later, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, scroll down and click Transfer or Reset, then click Erase All Content and Settings. On Monterey, open System Preferences from the Apple menu and choose Erase All Content and Settings from its menu bar. Enter your Mac user password, then your Apple Account password, and click Erase All Content & Settings. If it asks you to sign back in to your Apple Account or iCloud, ignore the message. The Mac erases and restarts, may ask you to pick a Wi-Fi network or reconnect a Bluetooth keyboard, and restarts again to the setup assistant. Do not finish setup. Press and hold the power button to turn the Mac off.
Step 3, the older route: erase in Recovery
If your Mac does not qualify for the quick route, start up from macOS Recovery, use Disk Utility to erase the drive, then reinstall macOS. When the setup assistant appears, press Command-Q to shut the Mac down instead of continuing. On an Intel Mac, Apple also says to reset NVRAM. If you have a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse you are keeping, unpair it first: Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth, Control-click the accessory and choose Forget. If you used Boot Camp, remove Windows and its partition with Boot Camp Assistant before you erase.
Leave the charger with it
Bring the charger if you have it. If it is gone, bring the Mac anyway and mention it when you reach out.
Then book the hand-off
Tell us the model, year and condition through the laptops page, or text (518) 501-0602. We set a time at 6 Northway Ln or come to you anywhere in the Capital Region, by appointment, and you are paid in cash on the spot. If the Mac will not finish erasing, tell us before the meetup.
Quick answers
- Do I need to sign out of my Apple Account before I erase a Mac?
- Yes, sign out first. It is the first step in Apple's own list, and Erase All Content and Settings will ask for your Apple Account password anyway. Then sign out of iMessage in Messages settings too.
- Does every Mac have Erase All Content and Settings?
- No. It needs a Mac with Apple silicon or an Apple T2 Security Chip running macOS Monterey 12 or later. Other Macs are erased from macOS Recovery with Disk Utility, followed by a macOS reinstall.
- Should I finish the setup screen after the erase?
- No. Apple says to shut the Mac down at the setup assistant instead of completing it. Press and hold the power button, or press Command-Q on the older route.
- Do I need to deauthorize iTunes?
- Only on macOS older than Catalina 10.15. On Catalina and later, iTunes is gone and there is nothing to deauthorize.
- Do I have to bring the charger?
- No. A charger is easier, but a Mac without one is still worth asking about. Mention it when you contact us.
