How do you wipe a Windows laptop before you sell it?

Back up your files, then go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC, choose Remove everything, and turn on Clean data. Then remove the laptop from your Microsoft account online. That wipes your files, apps and settings, and Microsoft describes Remove everything as the option for when you are giving away or selling a PC. Here are the steps in order.
Step 1: Back up your files
Reset removes personal files, apps and settings. Back up documents, photos and anything else you want with Windows Backup, an external drive or OneDrive. Files that already live in OneDrive or another cloud service are not affected by the reset, but check that they have finished syncing first.
Step 2: Find your BitLocker recovery key
If the laptop is encrypted, keep your BitLocker recovery key within reach, because Microsoft says you will need it in the Windows recovery environment too. For a personal laptop it is usually saved to your Microsoft account. Sign in at account.microsoft.com on another device to see it, or write it down before you start.
Step 3: Reset this PC with Remove everything
On Windows 11, open Settings and go to System > Recovery. Under Recovery options, select Reset PC. Choose Remove everything. When asked how to reinstall Windows, choose Cloud download for a fresh current copy, or Local reinstall to use the files already on the laptop, which is faster on a slow connection. Then turn on Clean data, which erases the files and cleans the drive, takes longer, and makes recovery harder. Microsoft recommends it before you sell a PC. On Windows 10, the path is Settings > Update & Security > Recovery, then Get started under Reset this PC. Follow the on-screen instructions. The screen can stay black for a long time, sometimes over 15 minutes. Do not restart the laptop yourself, because that can make the reset fail. Plug it in first.
Step 4: Remove the laptop from your Microsoft account
After the reset, go to account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in. Select Show details for the laptop, choose More actions > Remove, tick the confirmation box and select Remove. You can also select Unlink there to free a slot in your Microsoft Store device limit. If the laptop is offline the removal can take a day or two to go through, so retry later if it errors.
A note on BIOS and firmware passwords
If you ever set a BIOS or firmware password, clear it in the laptop's setup screen before you reset. It is easy to forget about, and only you can remove it.
Then book the hand-off
Tell us the brand, model and condition through the laptops page, or text (518) 501-0602. We set a time at 6 Northway Ln or come to you anywhere in the Capital Region, by appointment, and you are paid in cash on the spot. Bring the charger if you have it, and mention it if not. If the reset will not complete, tell us before the meetup. The Mac wipe guide has the Apple version of these steps.
Quick answers
- Is Remove everything enough to wipe a Windows laptop?
- Yes for a normal sale, if you also turn on Clean data. Remove everything removes your files, apps and settings, and Clean data cleans the drive as well. Microsoft notes this does not meet government or industry data-destruction standards, so a business with compliance needs should use a service set up for that.
- Do I need my BitLocker recovery key to reset a laptop?
- Possibly. If the laptop is encrypted, Microsoft says to have the recovery key ready because the reset environment may ask for it. It is usually in your Microsoft account.
- Should I choose Cloud download or Local reinstall?
- Either works. Cloud download fetches a current copy of Windows and needs a good connection. Local reinstall uses the files already on the laptop and is faster on a slow connection, but may lack the latest updates.
- Does the reset remove the laptop from my Microsoft account?
- No. Do that separately at account.microsoft.com/devices with Show details, then More actions > Remove. It is a quick extra step that keeps the account tidy.
- Do I have to bring the charger?
- No. A charger makes the meetup easier, but a laptop without one is still fine to ask about. Mention it when you contact us.
