Should you recycle your laptop or sell it for cash?
· Cash For Electronics Albany Team
If your laptop still turns on, even if it is slow, scratched or missing its charger, sell it first and recycle only what is left. Recycling is the right end for a laptop that is truly dead, but it pays you nothing, and a laptop that still runs is something a buyer can use. Here is how to decide, what recycling options exist around Albany, and how to wipe the laptop whichever way you go.
Sell it or recycle it: a quick way to decide
If the laptop powers on, even with problems, ask a buyer before you recycle it. A laptop with a cracked screen, a weak battery or a missing charger can still be something a buyer takes. If it will not power on at all, has been through water or a fire, or is very old, recycling may be the better route, and it is still worth one text to us first because parts from a dead laptop are sometimes of interest. If you are not sure which group yours falls in, send the make, model and a photo and we will tell you the same day.
Selling to us instead of recycling
We buy laptops and MacBooks for cash, in person, by appointment. You tell us what you have through the laptops page, we confirm whether it is something we can buy, and we meet at 6 Northway Ln, Latham or come to you anywhere in the Capital Region. If we buy it, you are paid in cash before you leave. If we cannot, you keep the laptop and can still recycle it, so asking costs you nothing. The meetup is by appointment only, not a walk-in. The laptop options guide compares us with other ways to sell.
Recycling options around Albany
Recycling is free or close to it in several places, but programs change, so confirm each one on its own site before you drive. Best Buy lists laptops among the items its stores accept for recycling, with a daily per-household limit, and recommends wiping your data first; check bestbuy.com for the current terms. Staples has described in-store tech recycling and a tech trade-in program, but we could not confirm its current terms, so check staples.com/recycling. If you live in the City of Albany, the city says electronics cannot go out with curbside pickup and can be dropped off at its Department of General Services on weekdays with proof of residency, and it also runs free household hazardous waste and electronics days; check albanyny.gov for the current hours and dates. Outside the city, your own town or county usually runs its own program. New York's electronics recycling law also requires manufacturers to offer free and convenient recycling to most consumers, per the state DEC, so a laptop maker's own take-back program is another route.
What recycling does not do
Recycling keeps a laptop out of the trash, which matters, but it does not pay you. Many programs also have limits on how many items you can bring in a day, and trade-in programs, which do pay, generally pay in store credit or a gift card. If your goal is cash, selling is the route that gets it. If your goal is only to get rid of a dead machine responsibly, recycling is the simplest.
Wipe the laptop first, either way
A recycler may not wipe your drive for you, and a buyer cannot take a laptop that is still tied to your account. Back up what you want to keep, sign out, then reset it. The Mac wipe guide covers a MacBook from signing out of your Apple Account to Erase All Content and Settings. The Windows wipe guide covers Reset this PC and removing the laptop from your Microsoft account. If the laptop is dead and will not reset, you can take the drive out and keep it, or ask the recycler how it handles data before you hand it over.
Do not forget the parts
Sometimes the laptop is beyond selling but the parts you pulled from it are not. If you have spare memory, a graphics card or a solid-state drive from an upgrade, the computer parts page lists the part types we buy. Send what you have through that page and we will say whether we can take it.
Quick answers
- Is it better to recycle a laptop or sell it?
- If the laptop still works, even badly, selling it first is usually better because recycling pays nothing and a buyer can use a working laptop. Recycle it if it is dead or no buyer wants it.
- Can I get cash for recycling a laptop near Albany?
- Recycling programs generally do not pay cash. To get cash you sell the laptop to a buyer, and we pay in cash at a meetup by appointment in the Albany area or at your door.
- Does Best Buy recycle laptops?
- Yes, Best Buy lists laptops among the items its stores accept for recycling, with a daily per-household limit. Terms can change, so read its recycling page before you go.
- Do I need to wipe my laptop before I recycle it?
- Yes, back up your files and wipe it first, because you cannot count on a recycler to do it for you. The Mac wipe guide and the Windows wipe guide walk through each step.
- Will you buy a laptop that will not turn on?
- Possibly, so ask before you recycle it. Send us the make, model and a photo and we will tell you whether it is something we can buy. If we cannot, you keep it and can still recycle it.
